Nippon Express Holdings (NX Group) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to strengthen India’s semiconductor supply chain and develop specialised logistics capabilities, with plans to establish a semiconductor logistics centre in Dholera, Gujarat, by 2027.
The agreement, signed in September 2026, comes as India expands its domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry. The collaboration aims to address the specialised transportation and storage requirements of semiconductor manufacturers, particularly the movement of sensitive equipment, materials and components.
Nippon Express and India Semiconductor Mission to Strengthen Chip Supply Chains
Under the agreement, Nippon Express and the India Semiconductor Mission will work together to identify and address logistics challenges facing India’s growing semiconductor industry.
Unlike conventional manufacturing, semiconductor production requires careful transportation of highly sensitive equipment and materials. Precision machinery can be affected by vibration and handling conditions during transit, making specialised transportation arrangements and logistics expertise important for manufacturers.
The collaboration will focus on improving the movement of semiconductor equipment and materials, sharing technical expertise and examining the logistics infrastructure needed to support manufacturing operations in India.
For Nippon Express, the agreement forms part of its wider efforts to expand its presence in India’s growing industrial and technology sectors.
Dedicated Semiconductor Logistics Facility Planned in Dholera
As part of its expansion plans, Nippon Express aims to open a dedicated semiconductor logistics centre in the Dholera area in 2027.
The proposed facility is intended to support the transportation, handling and storage requirements of semiconductor manufacturers operating in the region. Its development would introduce specialised logistics capabilities to an industrial ecosystem currently taking shape around major semiconductor investments.
The company has also outlined a target of achieving ¥60 billion in revenue from its India operations by fiscal year 2028, reflecting its broader expansion plans in the country.
Further details regarding the facility’s exact location, investment and construction schedule have not been confirmed in the announcement.
Dholera’s Semiconductor Ecosystem Expands Beyond Manufacturing
The proposed logistics centre comes as Dholera develops into an important location for India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions.
Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication project is among the major industrial investments planned for the region. Alongside fabrication facilities, semiconductor production requires a wider network of equipment suppliers, logistics providers, specialised warehousing and supporting infrastructure.
Nippon Express’ proposed facility would support this supply chain by addressing the handling and transportation requirements associated with semiconductor manufacturing.
The announcement also highlights how Dholera’s industrial development is extending beyond individual manufacturing plants to the supporting operations required for large-scale production.
While the logistics centre is targeted for 2027, its opening will depend on the company’s implementation plans and subsequent development progress.
RWI Perspective
The Nippon Express announcement is another step towards building Dholera’s semiconductor ecosystem. While manufacturing projects are taking shape, supporting facilities such as logistics centres and specialised supply chains will be equally important for the region’s industrial growth.
As Dholera continues to develop, these investments will be worth watching to understand how the region’s industrial infrastructure is progressing.
