Dholera International Airport is moving closer to its operational phase as construction progresses at the greenfield airport being developed in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region.
A July 2026 review by Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu placed construction progress at approximately 80%, with on-site work targeted for completion by September and operationalisation around September or October, subject to the required licensing and regulatory approvals.
The airport is expected to become an important part of the transport infrastructure supporting Dholera SIR and its emerging industrial ecosystem.
Airport Construction Enters the Final Phase
During a July 14 review, the Ministry of Civil Aviation assessed the remaining work required before operations can begin and directed authorities and contractors to target completion of on-site construction by September.
The ministry also highlighted the importance of completing the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) licensing process before the airport can become operational.
A subsequent ministry update reported approximately 85% construction progress and highlighted the airport’s potential role in supporting logistics and cargo activity.
Supporting Dholera’s Industrial Growth
Dholera International Airport is being developed alongside a major emerging industrial and smart-city region.
The Civil Aviation Ministry has described the airport as a gateway to Dholera SIR, with potential links to manufacturing, the semiconductor cluster and wider industrial activity.
Its role could therefore extend beyond passenger connectivity. As Dholera’s industrial base develops, the airport could support business travel, specialised personnel and time-sensitive or high-value cargo.
The July review also highlighted the potential relationship between the airport, Tata Electronics’ planned semiconductor facility and aerospace-related activities in the region.
Part of a Wider Connectivity Network
Dholera’s transport infrastructure is developing across multiple modes.
The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is already operational, while the Sarkhej–Dholera semi-high-speed rail project is progressing through its implementation and tender stages.
Dholera International Airport would add air connectivity to this network, creating a combination of road, rail and air infrastructure around the industrial region.
For Dholera Smart City Gujarat, this multimodal connectivity is an important part of the region’s wider infrastructure development.
Current Status
The airport should currently be described as under construction and progressing toward its operational phase.
A successful test landing took place in June 2026, but the airport still requires the necessary regulatory and operational approvals before scheduled commercial services can begin.
The key milestones to watch include:
- Completion of remaining construction
- DGCA licensing and regulatory approvals
- Operational readiness
- Confirmation of the opening date
- Airline and flight-service announcements
- Development of cargo and logistics capabilities
RWI Perspective
Dholera International Airport is a major infrastructure project supporting the region’s emerging industrial ecosystem.
Its significance extends beyond aviation, as the airport is being developed alongside the semiconductor cluster, manufacturing projects and major road and rail infrastructure.
For those following the Dholera Smart City development story, the airport’s transition from construction toward operations will be an important milestone.
RWI Developers will continue tracking the airport and other major developments across Dholera SIR through its News & Insights platform.
